Are Your Employees Happy?

12/06/14

According to the Seek Australian Employee Satisfaction and Motivation Survey 4 out of 10 are not happy in their jobs! Find out how to keep your employees happy, engaged and motivated to ensure employer loyalty.

4 out of 10 are not!*

Imagine you are working for a company where your manager never asks you what your future career aspirations are. There are no opportunities for you to develop your skills within the organisation or to move into other roles. How happy would you be? I bet you would probably be looking for another job after the first year!

So how do you keep your employees happy, engaged and motivated to ensure employer loyalty?

Research carried out by online job board Seek found that 26% of people who had changed jobs within the 3 years prior to the survey cited a ‘Lack of Appreciation’ as a key trigger for the move, whilst 25% cited a desire for ‘New Challenge’.  For those unhappy in their current positions top reasons included ‘Lack of Career Development’ (21%), ‘Lack of Feedback/Appreciation’ (21%) and ‘Lack of Training & Development’ (18%).

The ability to provide your employees with career growth opportunities addresses many of these issues and helps to ensure employees feel appreciated.

One approach could be to create an Internal Mentorship Program where your junior level employees have an opportunity to mentor others.  Providing your employees with an opportunity to step into another role and mentor someone will empower them and as a result will be happier!  Not only could this help hold on to your youngest, brightest talents it will also help prepare them to become future leaders within the company.

Strong benefits to the employee could include:

•    Gain personal development
•    Develop leadership and management skills
•    Improve career success
•    Increase skill level
•    Enhance self confidence
•    Higher morale
•    Confidence
•    Engagement
•    Positive attitude towards your company

Mentorship programs could include enlisting junior employees to carry out new staff orientation/training, supporting employee’s involvement in programs such as Big Brother/Big Sister, providing special project/training mentoring opportunities or to take on an intern.

Performance Careers specialises in developing internship opportunities for recent graduates and young professionals in a broad range of industries.  We carefully match candidates with host companies, cover all OH&S and provide ongoing support and induction – all at no cost to the host company.
