Intern To Permanent The Right Way

15/07/14

In order to gain the practical work experience that most resumes will be lacking after graduation, unpaid internships are growing ever more popular.

Finding a permanent role straight out of University is difficult, it’s not just the competition from thousands of other graduates who have also completed the same studies at the same time as you, it is whether your job application is even acknowledged. Most companies are very keen to provide an internship, especially when further training has been given in the soft skills and interview areas.

Internships can lead into contracts and permanent roles, and many of our students here at Readygrad are fortunate enough to land these with our host companies. Of course, it is completely down to your performance and whether there is a vacancy at that time, but there are certainly a few things you can do and not do to assist.

DO NOT ask in interview if there will be a job at the end of the internship – you will come across as pushy and presumptuous, this is the worst interview question you can ever ask.

DO NOT put pressure on your Internships Consultant/Career Advisor/Mentor to find a placement where there may be a contract/permanent role – we honestly do not know; an internship is about gaining local relevant experience from industry professionals in an Australian business environment. Keep your focus on this.

DO your research thoroughly before starting your internship – learn all about the company, the people in it, what you want to gain from this experience and what you can bring to the company.

DO show that your work ethic is on par with your technical skills – be professional and diligent at all times, proving you would be a worthy addition to the company’s workforce post internship.

DO thank the company for the opportunity they have given you – towards the end of your placement, send a thank you email showing your gratitude to your consultant and supervisor at the host company. Talk about the lessons you have learnt and the positive experiences, this will ensure an everlasting good impression and can certainly open doors.

Not all of our internships will result in a job at the end of a placement, however if you follow our mentors steps and advice and are keen to get involved there is no reason why a host company may not take you on. Remember 44% of our interns are offered employment by their host company.
