Kick-start your career in 2020

BY Julian Te |

To kick-start something requires and action, and action means taking the next step, signing up, making it happen. Not just thinking about it but doing it.
An internship is the perfect way to kick-start your career, with proven benefits…

Gain valuable work experience. No matter what field you’re in, there’s nothing like hands-on experience. It’s about immersing yourself in a corporate environment, discovering how a business operates and what part you could potentially play in a such an environment.

Having firsthand experience will give you an advantage in the job market, and valuable insight into Australian workplace culture.

Try before you buy. You may love your new tasks, responsibilities and putting the skills you learned at university into practice in the real world. Or you may not, which is fine too. Better to make this discovery during your internship than after months, years or even decades into your career (it happens!). You may like some parts of it but not others. For example, you may like the tasks you’re given, but you would rather work in a different department or a different type of company. Whatever your feelings, you will learn a little more about yourself, what makes you tick, and target future job searches accordingly.

Make valuable contacts in the industry. To a potential employer, you could either be one resume among hundreds, or a known quantity with a reputation as an enthusiastic and hardworking intern. Use your internship as a chance to prove yourself, meet important people and build up your personal brand. Not only will your mentor know what a great person you are, but also they will undoubtedly have friends, and friends of friends in your industry, drastically expanding your network.

So let’s get started. “I never worry about action, but only inaction”, said Winston Churchill. Act now and kick-start your career with an internship.
