Positivity for Career Success
Your attitude, not your aptitude, will determine your altitude.
I work with a colleague who always demonstrates a positive attitude. She has a trademark answer to the passing question, “How are you?” No matter what was going on that day, she always enthusiastically replies, “Fantastic! It is always sincere, never fake. No matter the circumstances, she chooses to be Fantastic!
You too can choose to have a positive attitude.
In fact, having a positive attitude at work is easier than you think. It can mean many things. I am going to share what has worked for me and hope it works for you too:
The very first thing is to choose a job you love
Choose your job according to your passion. You will be at your best performance level. When you enjoy what you do, you will spread that joy around you. People love happy people around them.
Improve Interpersonal Relations
People like positive people. Your business and personal relationships will definitely improve when you employ a positive attitude. You can also use this to help improve other people’s reaction and attitude towards you.
Be solution minded and not problem focused
Who is more likely to be retained or get promoted? Those who think positively and get results or those who constantly complain and say something isn’t their job? Never leave a problem that is within your scope of responsibility unsolved.
Be a good news reporter in your organisation
Look out for good things happening in your organisation or in the world outside, talk about those bits of good news.
Stay away from gossip
Never talk about problems you encountered with one colleague with other colleagues. Gossiping is not an example of a positive attitude in the workplace.
Be productive
Use every single moment of your time in a productive activity. If you need a pause, stretch out, take a walk, read something different from what you are doing, listen to music, but do not involve yourself in idle chat.
Lastly, Improve the attitude of other employees – your boss will notice
You can help create a positive attitude in the workplace by being the change you want to see. When you’re in a meeting or when you encounter a challenge, instead of dwelling on whose fault it is or on the challenge itself, steer the conversation to focus on how the issue can be overcome. You might seem a bit odd to others at first, but your attitude will begin to affect change. Soon people will be drawn to you because they can’t help but like being in the company of somebody positive.
Success is eighty percent attitude and twenty percent aptitude. So if you want to be successful in anything you take up, demonstrate a positive attitude at all times. Don’t sweat the small stuff. Just keep your chin up, smile as much as you can, and remind yourself that life is only as good as you make it.
